Will a faulty module cause the coils to fail?

It could but the opposite is also possible as well. In the first one the module output transistor fails and instead of pulsing the coil it gets sent straight voltage which causes it to overheat and fail.
In the second the coil shorts internally which draws more current than those transistors are designed for and the module fails.
What is the problem with your vehicle?
