Air Conditioning problem 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 102000 miles

I have a 2001 PT with the 2.4 L engine-Auto trans.
My AC compressor clutch has become noisy when the heater is in the defrost position. Mechanic advised this is causing the noise from the AC clutch. My AC works fine so I would rather replace just the clutch rather than the complete compressor.

My question

What is the process for replaceing just the clutch on the compressor? My mechanic has not performed this prochedure in the past and I told him I would try to find out the steps to replace the clutch if it could be done without removing the compressor. If the compressor has to be removed than I would rather replace the complete compressor rather than just the clutch.

Hello,

You must remove the compressor to change the clutch out here is a guide and diagrams (Below) of how to do the job.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/re-charge-an-air-conditioner-system

and

The correct reading is 0.35 to 0.65 mm (0.014 to 0.026 in.) . If the correct reading is not obtained, add or subtract shims until the desired reading is obtained.

Here is how to change the compressor clutch on your car (below)

Check out the diagrams (Below)

Please let us know what happens.

Cheers, Ken
