Hello christinar7
When timing belt break, it must be replaced.
Though expensive, it certainly costs less than replacing the cylinder head if the timing belt breaks and damages the valves.
In some instances, coolant dripping from a leaking water pump seal has gotten into the tensioner bearings, causing the tensioner to seize and snap the timing belt. The labor to replace the belt, pulleys and water pump is around 2 hours, so with parts the total repair bill may be $400 to $600 if you are paying a mechanic to do the work for you.
When you get new timing belt put on, have it inspected at 30000 miles and replace at 60000 miles to be on the safe side.
