Starter and alternator can fail close together on a high-mileage truck. If the battery drains after starter replacement, test the charging system and replace the alternator if it fails. Repairing worn parts is usually more economical than replacing the vehicle.
The owner of a 1997 Chevy Tahoe with 170,000 miles asked whether the starter and alternator can fail at the same time. The shop replaced the starter, then found the battery still drained and replaced the alternator. The expert said simultaneous failure is possible though not probable, and that high-mileage parts often wear out close together; original or rebuilt units have unpredictable life, and repairing the truck is generally more economical than replacing it.
