I'm confused. Don't know why the old computer is needed. The only concern is whether or not you have the factory-installed anti-theft system. If you do, you can stick any body computer and any engine computer in the car and they will self-program from the other computer.

What you can not do is install a used computer from a car that had anti-theft if your car does not have that system. Once a computer is programmed for anti-theft, it can not be undone, and the computer with that programming will teach it to the other computer. (Welcome to the world of complicated, expensive, unreliable, unnecessary computers. This is why I drive a 1988 Grand Caravan). If the used computer has anti-theft and was installed in your car, AND your car doesn not have anti-theft, both the engine and body computers will need to be replaced with computers from cars that did not have anti-theft.
