1998 Chrysler Concorde Cruise Control Problem

The cruise control will set and operate for maybe 4 miles then stop working. The cruise control light goes off when the system stops working. When the engine has been stopped for a period, the cruise control will work again for a few short miles. Any ideas will be appreciated.
