My Suburban was sitting for a couple years after the rear end blew apart. After getting the rear end rebuilt, I tried to start out in Drive but it wouldn't go. It starts out fine in 1 or 2 and then can be shifted into D no problem. Once I come to a stop I have to go in 1 or 2 to start oout again. The trans fluid was low (had a pan leak) and topped off but didn't make a difference.

Sounds like something sticking in the valve body. Have you driven it long enough to get the trans hot? Sometimes that will unstick valves in the trans. If not, then a trip to a trans shop may be in order, it doesnt sound like it needs any work beyond some in the valve body

Jack- Thanks for the response.
I drove it home, about 18 miles/30 minutes so I think it would have gotten the trans hot.
"Check valve body" sounds better than "need rebuild, so I'm hopeful.

If you can manually shift through the gears and it will work, then it should just be in the valvebody
