My 1990 suburban, 4 speed auto, recently developed a loud tick coming the bell housing area. I discoved the flex plate was cracked in several spots. The tranny was recently rebuild. Could there be a relationship? Also, does the tranny need to be dropped to replace the plate, or can I simply unbolt it from the torque converter and throw in a new one?

Hi there,

The drive plat is not normally replaced with the transmission, if at all suspect, it should be replaced, I feel that this is just a case of bad luck, if all torque converter bolts are tight, so be it, but if they are loose, you may have a case. You will have to remove the transmission as the drive plate is also bolted to the rear of the crank shaft.
