How do you know when starter is bad?

Hello, if you have good voltage and ground for the starter and no starter action, I suspect the starter. Even if the engine was locked-up for some reason, there would still be a load on the starter.

You can watch your lites, when you turn the key to crank, If the lites stay bright and no starter action, there may be an open circuit to the starter, maybe a neutral switch for an automatic. If the lites go out or almost, usually battery or cables causing a problem.

There is crank signal to starter solenoid, small wire, goes hot with the key in the crank position. There is also battery feed to the solenoid, hot all the time.
