I own a 2004 Chevy Silverado 1500, four wheel drive. When turning the steering to the left and left only there is a groaning noise in the steering. Initially I thought it could only be heard inside. But I am able to hear it outside with someone turning the wheel. The service rep immediatley wanted to change the gearbox. Wrong to much money to jump into that not knowing for sure that it is that. Any thoughts and yes the fluid level is fine.

Thanks.

Does it sound like the PS pump, or more like a creaking sound from a rubber bushing?

I guess it could be a bushing that is dry. How would you tell the difference between the two? Is there something I could put into the p/s pump res. To aid in possibly quieting it down before changing out the pump?

Honestly, there are products for the PS, but I never found any to work. Try taking something like WD40 and spraying all of the rubber bushings under the vehicle. See if that changes anything.

Let me know.
