Good day,
I have a noise coming from my truck. I took it to the shop and had the following things done
1. Tires checked okay
2. Replace the rear end fluid

I am thinking it could be a rear axle bearing going out. As the noise reduced some when I changed the oil of the rear end. The mechinic stated there were no metal or burnt oil from the rear end. Thus I am thinking it could be rear axle bearings. What would make this go out? IF the bearings were going out in the rear axle wouldnt there be a large amount of metal on the "magnet" plug and in the oil?

What would be a "estimated" price to replace the bearings? As I really dont want to get "screwed"
any help would be greatly appericated!
thank you! :)

The axle bearings won't cause metal shavings. It could also be the pinion bearing. Check that for play. Also, the axle bearings, when bad, will usually change sound when turning one direction or another. Does that happen?

As far as price, the part is around 65 dollars and the labor should take about 2 hours.

Good day,
the noise is constant. Someone said it could be the pion. However when the oil was changed wouldnth there be metal shaving or a burnt oil smell? What would cause this to "go out" since I only have 60K on this truck.
If this the problem what would this "estimated" cost for this.

Pinion bearing calls for 2.3 hours labor, and the part is around 100.00.

As far as the axle bearing, it calls for 1.9 hours for one side or 2.7 hours for both. The bearing is around 70.00 each.

NOTE: The prices I listed for parts are OEM parts at retail price. You can get them much cheaper at a parts store.

Let me know if this helps.

Joe
