My 2000 silverado has a roaring noise coming from the rear diff. It is alot worse when pulling a trailer that without. I've been told it could be the carrier itself that needs replaced at a cost of $700. I have a 1992 silverado with a good rear diff. Can I swapo out the 92 diff into the 2000 rear?

That is a tough call. I would be certain that the complete axles(housing and all) would not interchange. There would be issues with configuration of mounting, size, disc/drum brake applications, as well as ABS. I don't have the specific information on a 92, but I would speculate that the carriers themselves have changed in 8 years. The gear size could be different, and the ratio would be as well. Pinion flange may need to be changed, the amount of splines on the pinion may not accept one flange or the other. There is going to be alot of technical specification that is going to be involved in the determination, and that info may not be completely available to make it a consideration.
