Try starting the truck in other gears. If it does then it probably is your neutral switch. If not poss. starter This guide can help us fix it

The other day I got in my 1991 Chevrolet Silverado Pickup Truck, when I turned it on smoke filled the cab. I immediately turned it off. I looked at the battery, fuses, and all connections, everything looked good. I went to turn it on again and the truck wouldn't start again or even turn over.

Please check the main power feed to the ignition switch. There are a large gauge wire that runs from the fire wall. I have seen were a metal brace has rubbed through the wire isolation causing a short circuit. If this is the case it will cause the fusible link down at the starter to fail. Please inspect and get back to me. Thanks for using 2carpros. Com

Electrical problem
1991 Chevy Silverado Four Wheel Drive Automatic

I've replaced the tranny and the battery numerous times. It's been sitting for awhile now but I need to get it running again. Any ideas on what it might be? I thought it may be an electrical issue or the starter. Not sure though.

You need to make sure the battery has a full charge and cables/wires are clean and tight on both ends. Do any of the electricals work?

If your saying it won't crank, check the circuits at the starter solenoid. The crank feed comes from the ignition switch, usually a smaller purple wire, should be hot with the key in the crank position. Make sure the tranny is in park or neutral and the e-brake is set. Have you tried cranking it in neutral?

Today is Thursday. On Monday I went to go start my truck and when I turned the key there was a clicking noise that stopped when I stopped turning it. Today, I came outside to look at it and nothing will even turn on. No lights or anything. It has got a brand new battery, alternator, belt, and distributor and cap, so I have no idea what's wrong with it. Is it the starter?

We need to start with checking for a draw on the battery. The clicking noise that you heard was the starter relay or starter trying to turn. When the battery is drained it is not able to turn the starter over so it just clicks.

Now when you go out to start it there is not enough power in the battery to even turn the lights or gauges on.

This probably means that something is remaining on that is draining the battery.

I would try to charge the battery or jump start it from another vehicle. If it starts then we know the battery is the issue. Then we need to find what is draining the battery.

Hey guys

I own a 1991 Chevrolet Z71 5.7 liter V8 Automatic

The truck won't start! Light's won't dim, it doesn't crank, it doesn't click, it doesn't do ANYTHING! The battery is good, the starter is new, the fuses are good, the altinator is good, and I just bought a neutral safety switch, and looks like thats not the issue either! The funny thing is, its acting like it would if I tried to start it while in gear, but I don't seem to be able to fix it with the new neutral safety switch, unless I'm doing it wrong. Who knows. But what else could it be?

Recheck thestarter motor. Check to see if there is power at the purple wire at the starter when cranking, if there is power then your new starter is bad. (It wouldnt be the first time)

Here is the deal. I drive a 90 Silverado with a 350HP 5.7L. Everything comes on interior lights, exterior lights, dash, stereo, heater, air, etc, however, the engine will not turn over, it does not even crank. All I get when I turn the key is a mechanical thud nothing load or that sounds irregular but no slight turning.

I started by replacing my battery which was bad, however it made no change. I then changed the solenoid on the starter, after replacing this the car actually turned over and started however after putting it in gear and applying gas it died again.

Before replacing the solenoid I took the starter in with the solenoid attached to Autozone and had them test it. They placed it in the machine and told me that the solenoid was shorting out and that the starter was arching. Nevertheless, the mechanic at Autozone said even with the failing starter it still had enough life in it to atleast start the vehicle for a little bit longer. He said the starter would eventually die but that in its current condition it should still work for a few more months.

After replacing the solenoid and getting no response I opted to replace the starter entirely. I put the new starter in several times, using the gappers and attempting to get it positioned with the right clearance so that it would work properly. However, after putting in the new starter each time it would either not crank or turn only a bit but never fully kick over.

I then replaced all the battery cables and again no change. When replacing the battery cables I noticed that there was a smaller wire running along the +(positive) battery cable that was severely worn in one area. I spliced the wire exposiing clean copper and crimped it with a joiner. I covered w/ electrical tape and again got no change.

I have tryed everything I know with the starter system. I have done the work on my vehicle for the last three years, I own the Haynes manual and I am fairly familiar with my truck. I am pretty confident that it is an electrical issue but have no idea where to start.

Again, everything on the interior turns on and the exterior turns on as well, however, when I crank the engine nothing happens no turning. I would appreciate any guidance on this as I don't really have the money to get it towed and worked on at a shop.

Hi pabowskie, Welcome to 2carpros

after putting in the new starter each time it would either not crank or turn only a bit but never fully kick over.

Battery and connections are up to par-

Do this have helper hold key in the cranking position and check for battery voltage on the purple wire on the starter solenoid -no power here test the ignition switch there's is no park/neutral switch in between the ignition switch and starter motor

Where is the ignition switch located. That is the only thing I have not checked or replaced. Is it an easy fix for a do-it-yourselfer?

I apologize, not the switch itself but the wiring for the switch? Is it the smaller wire which connects to the starter solenoid. Also, what is the smaller wire that runs along the positive battery cable?

At the ignition switch wiring harness its either a purple or yellow wire this is your starting circuit that goes straight to the starter solenoid. When key is at starting position this wire should have power from the switch all the way to the starter solenoid

The smaller wire on the battery positive cable is the main fusible link wire

My problem is I started my truck went on tomy destination turned off when I tried to restart it did not turn over. After towing it home I investigated and found a wire mounted to the firewall junction had burnt into. The wire has a small black cylinder attached to it, I believe its a fuseale link? I'm trying to figure out what caused the short in the wiring.

If I am thinking of the right wire it is an orange wire and is located behind the plastic relay cover on the right hand side of the firewall.
The black thing you are seeing attached to the wire is what is called a heat sync, It is there to disperse heat in the wire.
Simply solder in a new piece of the appropriate gage wire to replace the burnt piece, then wrap a big wad of electrical tape around the wire where the old heat sync was.
This will do the same thing as a heat sync and disperse the heat in the wire.
Hope this helps!

Will start sometimes:engine turn over normally and no draging starter, fires' rightup. Then sometime you try and all you get when turning the key is that the temp gauge goes to the right, clicks and then nothing. This does not dim the lights in any way, I've check the battery, checked out ok, checked netural position on gearshift, no problem, checked cables, looked ok, I even tried tapping on starter while someone is turing the key, still nothing. If I leave it sit for a week or so and try again it will fire right up

Take the + battery cable off and clean it -- no matter what it looks like. Also make sure all the wire connections going to the starter are secure and clean, especialy the ground wire. If all fails the strater may be failing -- have it tested.
