Truck runs hot when driving, but the temp actually drops at idle. Heater has stopped working as well, will come on periodically, but not consistent. When the truck runs hot, turning on the heater will drop the temp a little. There is a slight odor of antifreeze after this happens, but not inside the truck. I believe I have this narrowed down to three possibilities: 1) Heater core is about to go bad. 2) Thermostat is bad. 3) Losing vacuum in the cooling system.
any ideas?

Is the cooling system full of coolant? Have you checked the thermostat? Does your vehicle overheat any time or only at highway speeds or in city driving? Have you ever had the cooling system serviced?
