I am trying to set timing on my Chevy S-10, V-6, 4.3L, Vin Z. There are two grooves cut in the harmonic balancer (?) But I think we found the right one and whitened it. The tab with the timing degree scale is so rusted, that even a fine wire brush could not uncover the markings. Do you have a picture or explian how the marking would read? Also, is it normal for the timing marks to not line up after you are done and reconnect the tan wire?Black stripe under the glove box?

I have an old 94 vin w and the timing scale has v cuts in it and one big cut which is 0 all the way right. One of these guys may know exactly or you could call the dealership. But as for the timing being off after reconnection is perfectly normal. The module and computer advance it. The connector when unplugging it "bypasses" this. Its done for optimal spark timing. Increase your rpms and will advance even further.

Thank you for such a prompt reply. My timing scale has V-cuts as well, anmd I guess the one nearest the bottom appears bigger, plus I think I can barely read a zero. I don't know why in the world there would be 2 grooves cut on the harmonic balancer. I figured the timing would change once I reconnected the bypass. I have asked dealerships questions before, but they rarely work on these old trucks anymore, and often do not have service manuals that go that far back. They give an answer based on experience. Thanks again.
