This thing runs fine, until you put in Drive or Reverse then it dies. What is the problem?

Torque converter locked up.
If you want the manufacturer not recommended method to be sure this is the problem start it in neutral, increase the rpm, 2000 to 3000 should be more than enough, the automatics in these trucks aren't known for their durability, and put it in gear: its not gonna like this much. If it moves and shifts the drivetrain is fine.

Run it around the block in 3rd or plain D. Basically out of overdrive so that the torque converter doesn't lock up. This will hurt your fuel economy, but at least it moves.

If you can find it unplug the converter lockup solenoid so that you can run in fourth that might help the economy a little.
