The alternator that I am taking out, was marked at the terminals, 1 & 2. The new alternator has no marking. The orginal wiring has been replaced, so I can't follow the wiring diagram in the manual. Does it matter which lead goes where?

one wire (probably a thick red one) goes straight to the battery.

the other wire (probably a smaller white one) goes to the volt meter or light.

the pigtail should only be able to plug in one way.
