1971 Chevy Malibu alternator wires

I would like to know where the two wire connector leads too going out of the alternator.I see that one is marked F for feild.What does this mean?

alternator has 3 wires. Blue wire runs to the alternator regulator (marked F). White wire also runs to the regulator. Red wire runs to ignition switch and has a fusible link attached (orange) which runs to the regulator.
