burning oil?
but i would rule out the rings with todays engine technologies. my truck was driven hard every day it started, and pulled race cars, tractors, heck anything i could hook up to it and i pulled it out running perfect at 221,000 miles with no bearing wear, almost no cylinder wear. only thing was egr ports were 80% clogged up from sludge.
seals not seats. and I found a chiltons for that car @ amazon. good luck
Suggested Repair
Note whether the oil smoke clears after a short time or continues constantly. Smoke that clears points to worn valve guides or valve stem seals; constant smoke points to piston rings. Idle and takeoff smoking is more consistent with valve stem seals or guides, so confirm that pattern before rebuilding or replacing the engine.
Conversation Summary
The owner of a 1995 Buick Riviera SC reported oil burning especially at idle and takeoff and asked about simple checks and a service manual before major repairs. One reply said bad rings require a rebuild or another engine. Another said acceleration smoke indicates rings, while idle and deceleration smoke indicates worn valve stem seals. The expert said smoke that clears quickly points to valve guides, constant smoke points to rings, and rings are less likely. A later reply clarified seals rather than seats and reported a Chilton manual was available.
