what does it mean when smoke is coming from the hood and a hot coolant temp message pops up?

It means your engine overheated. If you’re lucky your engine hasn’t sustained costly damages (yet), but don’t drive the car. Get your cooling system inspected right away. If you feel like tackling this yourself let me know I can help, but if you’re not mechanically inclined, take it to a shop.
