Hi, I have a 1989 Corsica LTZ with a 2.8 liter motor. It only has 67,000 miles on it. I just replaced the head gaskets and intake gaskets. Prior to replacing them, the car had sat for 4 years, waiting for me to get out of high school and get a full time job. After replacing them, I tried to run the car. I wasn't getting and fuel and my pump was not turning on. So I proceeded to my manual and it said to hook up a 12 volt battery to my fuel pump test lead. So I did, and the pump finally turned on. I ran the car for around 20 min and it quit. So I decided to replace the fuel pump. I have no clue where to start to be honest. I've tried unbolting my tank straps and the bolts wouldn't even move. I am not one to ask for help and I'm running out of options. I need a vehicle that gets good mileage and this is what I could get my hands on. So where would I start?

Hi:

It sounds like you're on the right track. However, to replace the fuel pump, the tank must come out of the vehicle. Try soaking the strap bolts with something like PB Blaster or the like. Get them good and wet and allow them to soak for a few hours. If that doesn't work, you will need to cut the straps off and replace them with new ones. Be careful not to cause any sparks near the fuel tank just in case there is a fuel leak.

Did you drain the old gas out of the tank and replace it with fresh fuel? Four year old gas will not run a vehicle.

Let me know if you have any questions.
