Took my truck to one of the local dealers for some brake work. Aside from the brake work they say that it looks as if I have never changed my plugs or wires, which is not really true, although I can't remember the last time they were changed. Here is the question, when I asked how much $ they tell me roughly $200 to change plugs and $300 to change plug wires. I know spark plugs aren't that high but when I ask about the plug wires I'm told they are $200. This is nothing like it used to be when I worked on my own trucks. I told them to just fix the brakes and ABS system. What has happened to make plugs and wires a $500 job? I'm thinking I need to start working on my own vehicles again.

The national average for customer pay work is $100.00 an hour. Thats not what the tech gets paid "believe me I know" but thats what most shops charge. The wires are somewhat difficult to change. The labor is usually two hours for the wire and one hour for the spark plugs. Total that up with labor part and tax and thats about right.

Wow, I would have thought the plugs more difficult than the wires, but it has been 15 years since I spent much time under the hood. For me, it's easier to understand 100 an hour than it is 200 for a set of plug wires. A quick internet parts search shows a set of Bosch plug wires for my 454 to be 100 rather than the 200 they quoted me. Is this also the dealer norm?

Thanks,
TC

Yes most aftermarket parts can be found at a discounted price as opposed to the dealers oem parts.
