Manifold gets really Hot

I have a 99 Cavalier RS. When I started the car yesterday and pulled it up on ramps for an oil change, popped the hood, accidentally touched the manifold. The manifold was really hot, hot enough to burn a blister on the skin. The car had not been started prior to this. It took less than 4 minutes for the manifold to get this hot. Is this normal for this car or what is causing it? What will happen if it isn't fixed? Will it hurt to ride the car? I have noticed before this day, while driving the car it acts like it is smothering and slows down some then after I stop and the car is idleing it acts like the motor is going to shut down. After I ride the car 30 miles or more 1 day, the next day it takes a while to start, as if it was run too hard. Can all this be connected? What could the problem be?[/B]

Which manifold. The intake or exaust. Yes the exaust manifold will get extremely hot very quick after all the heat from the internal combustion flows through almost instantly after explosion. If its the intake then if it gets that hot that quick I might look further into it. Good luck :)
