Intake gasket, head gasket, cracked cylinder head or less likley cracked block. Take the heads to a machine shop and have them pressure tested and check for cracks.

Look for the pistons that are the cleanest and that is the probable area of the breech.

Suggested Repair

Have the cylinder heads pressure tested and checked for cracks at a machine shop. Also inspect the intake gasket and identify the cleanest pistons as the likely breach area; a cracked block is less likely.

Conversation Summary

The owner of a Chevrolet Cavalier 3.1 reports white smoke and milky engine oil. After removal, the head gasket did not appear broken or leaking. The expert says possible causes include the intake gasket, head gasket, a cracked cylinder head, or less likely a cracked block, and recommends machine-shop pressure testing of the heads plus checking which pistons are cleanest.
