I was curious to what could be the reason for the check engine light to come on. Could it be from bad gas? The same day the light came on my nephew put gas in the car from a gas station that I will not use myself because a few months ago I got gas there and then my car was stalling out. Someone said to take the battery cables off to reset the computer. Will that really help? What all can I check myself before I go to a mechanic? Thank You

Hello,

The check engine light comes on when the vehicle's on-board diagnostics detect faults within the engine management system. It could be any number of sensors or parts. It can also be due to an emission issue.
So, it is possible for the light to be on due to bad fuel.

The best course of action is to have the vehicle scanned and retrieve the code(s). This can help you determine if this is a bad gas issue or something else.
You can take the vehicle to your local auto parts store, and they will be able to scan and let you know the codes.
