Drive Train Axles Bearings problem
2002 Chevy Cavalier 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 100k miles

hey guys- Ive got the calipers and rotors off.

also got the axle nut and the three star bolts removed from the hub- but it doesnt move!

Ive read in some places that you can just pull the axle out by hand - thats not happening. I can push the axle, along with the cv/halfshafts IN a little bit- just cant pull anything OUT.

I've read that some people drop the ball joint and remove the two big strut bolts on the top of the knuckle- and then they push the axle IN through the knuckle.

All im really trying to do is get the HUB OFF. With the three star bolts out it should just pull straight off- but either metal bonding or the axle still being in there is stopping me cold.

HELP!

Use a ball peen hammer and hit it outward at the flange, it probably has some rust, or corrosion holding it on.

Hey fellas how do you replace the outer cv boot?

Ive got the halfshaft free from the hub (removed strut bolts) I just dont know about pulling the cv joint apart or installing the new boot.

The joint itself is fine and still completely engulfed in grease - I drilled through the boot just enough to puncture it.

Thanks again for any help

Why did you drill into the boot? If it wasnt split open, it was OK. Remove the clamp on the inside, use a chisel and split it, then tap the jount off with a hammer. You need a clamp tool to install the new boot, or just buy a reman, axle. They are fairly cheap.

I drilled through the boot on accident! Sorry about that.

I did it while boring out the control arm for an "oem" ball joint.

Look to domestic vehicles when trying to attain new mechanical skills on the fly.

Thanks again
