2001 Chevy Cavalier Two Wheel Drive Manual 72000 miles

Check engine light came on(2001 Cavalier 5 speed transmission) a while ago. Took it in and was told that it was a vacuum leak and it requires a smoke test to find the leak. Question what is a ball park price for this type of seek, find and repair service. I know it will vary depending on where the leak is and it's accessibility to detect and repair. Thanks for any insight you can throw my way.

Purley depends on the shop.

A shop that has a smoke machine does not make them capable of diagnosing, only that they are a smoke machine owner.

We charge about 70 dollars, but it depends on what you need to do to nail it down. If it gets involved and the tank has to be dropped, it's another ball game.

On the other hand it may be a 20 dollar thing that is obvious quickly.

Hey, just a follow up.
Had the smoke test performed. $95.00 for the diagnostic roughly 2 hours of labor $50.00 for parts. Total price $258 and change. Turns out to be the Vent solonoid Pigtail. They had some trouble with the new piece had to go direct to the dealer which was a little more for the part. All in all I'm satisfied with what they did, what I've learned and thank you very much for your info.

Sounds like they did you right. It isn't always black and white with this stuff. A novice shop would have fell on their face with this.
