I was driving my car, it shut off and I could not start it back up again. Had to have it towed home and I cannot afford a mechanic to fix it. What I was wanting to know is where the fuel pump relay is located in the car? I want to try the cheapest thing first before I think it could my fuel pump.

If you cannot afford a mechanic you definitely do not want to randomly start replacing parts.

Here is a great link to get started. On your car, I would check for spark first, as ignition components tend to fail on older Acura’s.

The first figure below is your under hood fuse box. The second one shows the location of the PGM-FI main relay. I cannot find any indication of another relay specifically for the pump.

The simplest test is to buy some starting fluid and spray it into the intake and then try to start the car. If it starts and shuts off, then you know it is a fuel delivery issue of some sort. If it simply will not start, no matter how much you spray, then it is a spark or timing issue.

Also, worth asking, is the service engine light on? If so, you should see if you can get your hands on an OBD2 scanner and scan it.

Hello JOYCE ROMINGER,

If you decide you would like to conduct the scan yourself here is a link to an article from this site that features written step by step instructions and pictures explaining how to do the scan yourself. Also, I have included a link to our YouTube channel with a how to video on code scanning.

This is applicable even if your check engine light is not on.

Most scanners are inexpensive to purchase, you can purchase one online from sites like Amazon.com

Once you have the codes please get back to us with the code number(s) so that we can further assist you. We are always happy to help.

Thank you for visiting 2CarPros.com.

Kindest regards,

Renee

Okay. An easy way to check fuel pump operation is to get down on the ground near the fuel tank and have someone turn the key on. If the pump is getting power and working correctly, it will run for two to three seconds then cut off until you crank the engine.

If you do not hear anything, take a blunt object (like a rubber mallet would be perfect) and have someone turn the key on while you tap on the tank. Notice I said tap, not whack. If you hear the pump start then, then you need a new pump.

If you do not hear it, then you are not getting power to it for some reason. Check that out and get back to us.
