Electrical problem
1993 Chevy S-10 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

I have a 1993 s10 blazer that doesn't turn over when the switch is turned all the way to start. Headlights come on bright, fuel pump comes on, digital dash lights up, battery has 12.1 volts with no load, and when you turn on headlights, or turn key to start, it doesn't show any volts dropping form the volt meter I had attached directly to the battery.I have tried moving the steering column up and down, pullling the shifter up and down. What next?I am currently having it towed home so I can look at it closer and where it is warmer.

Hello -

So if I understand..... You turn the key all the way to start and nothing... No noise, no click... No nothing.

If this is so to me it is either your starter or your ignition switch.

I would take jumper cables and connect the positive to the positive side of the battery then touch the other end to the starter at the bolt where the positive cable connects. There will be a spark...

MAKE SURE THE CAR IS IN PARK AND EMERGENCY BRAKE SET... PLEAE BE SAFE!

Next, if the starter turns over then most likely it isn't the starter I would say it is the ignition switch. For the ignition switch you would have to go into the column.....I have info on how to change but not how to check.

Please tell me your engine size in liter and if the starter check works for you.

Well by accident I found out that it must have been a the starter not grounded well. When I was underneath checking the voltage of the purple wire, I had my son turn the ignition switch to the start and it showed that I had 12.3 volts. I had the starter unbolted so that I could reach the connections with the voltage tester and the starter body slipped off to the side touching the frame which in turn made the starter turn. I pulled the starter away from the frame again and turned the ignition switch to the start position and the starter didn't turn.I then bolted the starter back on and it started the engine right up. Everything good now, who would guess something this little. Thanks again.

Hello -

Fantastic and thanks for the info.

Oh yes my friend....... It is always best to start with a good general look over as you did, touching, shaking, pulling etc. There have been times I have spent an hour looking for a cause when it was something very simple that I should have caught by first just giving it a good visual or checking a fuse.

Glad you found the problem!

I have tried to start my car but the engine wont turn over, I took my starter to a local autozone but it was still good. Ive also tried my battery it was dead they charged it, but the car still wont turn over. The car turns on the lights come on and all its just not making any noise, I checked my fuses not that either. What could it be?

Is it an automatic or manual?Make sure that the ground cable is clean and tight, not just on the battery but on the block to. If it is an auto try to start it in neutral with your foot on the brake. It sounds like either a neutral safety switch, a bad ground or a seized motor. Can you turn the motor over by hand? Does it atleast make a clicking noise when you try to crank it?

Once a month for the last three months my S-10 has quit running. It turns over but dosen't want to start. I have replaced the fuel pump, filter and the ignition module. The repair shop has put it on the "computer" but can find nothing wrong. Sometimes after a day at the shop it just starts as if nothing is wrong. Sometimes this happens when the truck has been running for quite a while. I'll driving along and it just quits. This has become more frequent now and doesn't start at all.

Check and test the fusible link/all fuses and ignition switch if okay-Do below

Get a helper disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine at least 3/16 away from ground -have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel related problem, Do you hear the fuel pump come On when you turn key on? If not check fuel pump fuse and fuel pump relay if so, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel filter/fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light. No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs, coil's resistances, distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, cam and crank sensors and computer Note: If it doesn't apply disregard it

On my 2.8L V6 '93 Chevy S-10 Pickup, my clutch was replaced after it had completely gone out due to wear. The flywheel was fine. The truck drove beautifully for several weeks with no problems. One day I parked at a restaurant, ate, came out and it would not start. When I turned the key, it made a loud whirring sound with no signs of turning over. When I towed the truck out of there, I got it started by popping the clutch into first gear with the vehichle in motion. Drove it for 35 miles with no problems. Got it to the garage. We replaced the starter to no avail. We removed the shim that was originally on the starter to reduce the clearance between the starter pinion and the flywheel and that did nothing. The teeth on the flywheel look fine.

The starter was not replaced when the clutch was replaced. We replaced the starter after it wouldn't start and it was doing the same thing, making the same noise and not turning over, but I'll test the new (rebuilt) starter today.

Do you mean it cranks over and will not start or just won't crank at all/nothing/nada?

Cranks and w/n start

Get a helper disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine at least 3/16 away from ground -have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel related problem, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel filter/fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light. No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs, coil's resistances, distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, cam and crank sensors and computer Note: If it doesn't apply disregard it

No crank at all/nothing/nada:

Could be the starter, starter relay, park and neutral switch and ignition switch assuming the battery and connections are good.

Pull out the starter, using jumper cables neg to ground the casing pos to jump between solinoid and pos onthe starter, hold on tight if the starter kicks over strong it's ok if solinoid clicks and nothing else happens have your stater rebuilt or buy a new one, if it works put socket on crank bolt turning clock wise try to roll over the motor to make sure its not seized. Good luck
