Ran out of gas, car died, and pulled into a gas station. Filled about five gallons into tank, took a few cranks but it turned over. Drive it around the block, it is a little rough. I start heading home and the car dies, power steering goes out at a stop light. Crank it up and give it gas and it starts up again. Have to do this almost every time I stop. Finally about two miles down the road at a stop sign, it dies again but this time it won't turn over. Get it pushed to the side of the road in a residential area. There was a moderate amount of white smoke coming from the left side of the hood as well and a light burning smell.

Not really sure what to do at this point. Pretty broke and I am praying I can come up with a solution to at least get it the two or three blocks to my house.

You could have an overheating problem. Wait for the engine to cool down and then check the radiator coolant level. Bad overheating can result in engine stalling and non-starting
