Car died a couple blocks from home. I let it set a few minutes it started back up, I made it home and it died again. the charging system failure lite on dash. The battery seemed dead so replaced with new one and now it will turn over but will not start. I have checked for spark it is good. my guess is alternator or voltage regulator. is there anything else that I can check?

If the wire is for field control, it probably runs to the engine control module. How much of the wire is melted, can the end just be spliced on? Do you know why it melted?

Check to see if there is an electrical draw when everything is off. There are directions on our homepage under the DIY section. Let me know what you find.

Hi:
I can't imagian that the alt would cost more than 200 dollars and 100 for the battery. I believe to R&R the alt takes about 1 hour.

Disconnect the battery, remove the serp belt, remove the bolts mounting the alt, remove the wiring from the alt, and remove the alt. Reverse the sequence to replace it.

I noticed the hot copper wire that goes to my generator has rubbed up against something and caused it to wear down to all but a few threads of wire. To replace the entire harness is a lot more involved I think than trying to repair or rebuild the wire that is left. Do you have any ideas on how to do this?

Well you could cut the wire , strip it and then twist the too copper ends together. After that wrap it in electrical tape. This would probably be the easies way to fix it .

There's a place for four wires in that plug so it can be used in numerous different applications. When the original plug used only one wire, you use the same wire in the same location in the new plug and you just don't use the other wires. They can be cut off.

When you connect wires, the only acceptable method is to solder the splice, then seal it with heat-shrink tubing with hot melt glue inside. Never use electrical tape in a car. It will unravel into a gooey mess on a hot day.

Also be aware that due to their design, these generators have a very high failure rate. To reduce the number of repeat failures, you must replace the battery at the same time unless it is less than about two years old.
