Engine Mechanical problem
1997 Cadillac Deville V8 Automatic

my car over heated and I had to wait for it to cool down I then drove home. My boyfriend drove it a couple days later and it again overheated and he had it towed home this happened in jul of 08 I changed the thermastat out and started the car to make sure everything was running and nothing leaking which I did not notice. Since this my car battery was dieing so I bought a new Alternator when I took my vehicle to the mechanic he told me I had a cracked head and that when they started it that there was water shooting out of the heads wouldn't have have seen this when I cranked my car up after replaceing the thermastat and cranking up after replacing the battery 2 times? I believe he is pullingmy leg he wants 2500.00 to fix the engine or he said he'll buy my car for 150.00 this doesn't sound right what do you suggest?

Take it to another shop and have a compression test performed. It will tell you if the head is cracked.

Overheating is one sign of a cracked head.

Replacing the heads on a Northstar, is not cheap, and time consuming.

IF indeed the head is cracked, you may consider getting a used engine.

The mechanic probably offered you money for the car because he will do just that, replace engine, or he had some used heads from another car.

This happens often with cadillac 4.6L northstar. Have it check by another mechanic. If it is the head gaskets. It not recommend to repair this motor. Repairs don t work. A used motor is about $1000. Or more if you can find one, and about $1,200. To install. I know its a hard decision to make. I had to make three times. Good luck.
