Transmission problem
2000 Buick Regal 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic unk. miles

When driving my automobile the engine revs up like the car was placed in nuetral. I must stop and the transmission selector will not allow me to place the car in any other gear. However if I place the transmission selector in park. Then turn off the car and wait about 4-6 minutes I can restart the car and place it in drive and proceed on my trip... then usually about 3-5 minutes it does this again. I have checked the transmission fluid and it is within required level. The transmission does not make any clunking noise when shifting or driving it just seems to go into nuetral while driving as explained. I hope you have an answer that I can afford as I am disabled and on a fixed income.

This is a tough question to answer without test-driving your vehicle.

First of all, is the "Check engine" light coming on? If you problems are transmission related, then the light should illuminate when ever you experience this problem.

If the light does not come on, then I'd say that you have a vacuum leak on the engine. This will make your motor rev higher than it should, and confuse the computer into thinking you're trying to accelerate when you really aren't.

Also, when you're driving, and the motor revs higher, are you still able to go forwards? Or are you forced to stop?

If you are forced to stop, I'd think that your powertrain control module is failing.

But as I said before, it's impossible to know for sure without test-driving and hooking your computer to a scanner.
