My buddy has an 84 buick regal that cranks but wont start and has a gassy smell to it while cranking. I just replaced the carburetor because the valve was stuck in the wide open position allowing the float bowl to flood every time I tried to start the car. Originally my friend comes to me with a problem of the car always overheating and also leaking as well. So I replaced the thermostat and fixed the coolant leak when I noticed the carburetor was leaking from where the fuel filter housing threads into the front of the carburetor. So I fixed that problem and in the midst of fixing that I had to replace a section of the fuel line because it was twisted which amazes me to this day how the car still ran. I accidentally broke the bracket for the throttle lever but that doesnt matter because the valve was no good and just kept flooding the float bowl anyway, so I replaced the carburetor with one that was rebuilt. So after checking the map sensor and finding it was no good and replacing and the coil which wasnt producing enough spark(High Energy Ignition). So my question is why does the engine crank in this car but not start with a gas smell lingering? Would a open in a electronic vaccum regulator switch be the cause of the problem? Or could it still be fuel related? Or could it be the mixture control solenoid not functioning at all? Maybe someone has some insight to why this car doesnt run for an apprentice technician.
