I am getting a code 26 on my 1991 Buick century and I cannot find anything in any book that tells me what to check. I do know that it stands for quad driver. Could it be the map sensor because it dies when I put it in gear it is an automatic trans.

Suggested Repair

Check the quad-driver control circuit for a short to 12 volts caused by a shorted component, and suspect a faulty ECM if that circuit is not shorted.

Conversation Summary

The owner of a 1991 Buick Century reported code 26, understood it as a quad-driver fault, and asked whether a MAP sensor could explain the engine dying when shifted into gear. The expert said code 26 indicates a malfunctioning quad driver and listed possible symptoms, including inoperative cooling fans, poor driveability from continuous canister purge, a coolant light staying on, inoperative EGR with code 32, and an inoperative torque converter clutch. The stated causes were a short to 12 volts on the control circuit from a shorted component or a faulty ECM.
