Brake lights stay dimly lit while car running?

The brake lights stay dimly lit while the car is running. The cruise control is also not working. When the brake is pressed they light up brightly as they should. When headlights are off and car running, taillight brake lights are dimly lit. When headlights are on, high mount light is dimly lit. When headlights are off and car running and you remove taillight bulbs, high mount bulb will then dimly light. I have unplugged the brake switch and the light stays dimly lit and will not illuminate when the pedal is pressed. I can pull fuse 19 which is for brake lights and lights will stay dimly lit and pedal will not illuminate them. I can pull fuse 21, however and the brake lights will go out. I don’t have a wiring diagram to further diagnose but feel confident that I have eliminated the brake switch, headlight switch/dimmer, cruise control deactivation switch and all bulbs and connectors and visible wiring appears intact. Please help! Thank you!

Hi,

It sounds like there is a short to ground or a weak ground causing power to back feed through the lights.

With all fuses in place, what happens if you disconnect the brake lamp switch? Let me know.

Also, I attached the wiring schematic for the exterior lighting circuits. I had to cut the pic in half to make it readable, but I did overlap the two so you can follow from one to the next.

Here is a link you may find helpful:

Let me know if this helps.

Take care,

Thank you so much! I did end up figuring it out after much lost sleep. It ended up being someone (who shall remain nameless lol) put 3157 Amber bulbs in the front parking/turn signal lights instead of 3457 Amber. The bulbs look almost identical and were functional, but when I changed them to the correct bulb the brake light went out and the cruise control now works. How a light bulb that’s not even illuminated can cause another light in another circuit to partially illuminate is beyond me. But hey, it fixed it so I’m not going to ask too many questions. Thanks again!

Hi,

Thanks for the update. There is a chance the different bulb was allowing power to back feed to the rear. Regardless, I'm glad it's fixed.

Take care and feel free to come back anytime in the future.

Joe
