Engine failure program message appeared on my BMW 530i and was wondering what it means? The car was a bit sluggish and once I turned my car off the message still appeared then went off . I started my car about 10 mins later and it seemed to be running as it normally does.

When normal operation is restored by cycling the key, it can and often means the fault is not currently present and if it reoccurs then there is reason to be concerned. You might have a cam sensor fault or some intermittent issue that could be worth investigating if it comes back, so lets monitor it and see if it needs further attention, does this seem reasonable to you?
