I am in process of replacing alternator on 2002 525i. I have the old one out but did it working around the main belt which is still very tight. I don't imagine I can squeeze the new alternator in without learning where and how the belt tensioner is and works. Can someone adivse?

There is a tensioner and a deflection pulley on that model. They are black and have covers that pop off. You state that you replaced the alternator already so you have already popped the cap off the deflection pulley to access one of the mounting bolts, now the other pulley that is very similar in appearance is the tensioner pulley. Pop the cap off that and use the bolt holding that pulley to turn the tensioner and you will be able to reinstall the belt.(Turn the bolt to the right) hope this helps you
