Water pump failed, August; Replaced.
Going through a lot of coolant, no visible leakage after water pump replacement and engine running a tad hotter than is normal.
December; White smoke billowing from battery side of engine compartment, intermittently. Runs like a champ. Still using too much coolant & running a bit warmer than normal.
Take to mechanic; He replaced a freeze plug.
Christmas Day; Filled overflow, as still going through coolant. Drive 75 freeway miles, mostly go until around 55th mile. Traffic jam and van is beginning to overheat (warning gauge goes to 3/4 mark) traffic breaks, engine cools (idiot a bit under 1/2 mark, which was the noticeable improvement after fuel pump replacement). Drive rest of way. Before leaving to drive 75 mile bk, 1/3 gal of coolant.
January. Through February. Going through tons of coolant. No over heating until one day didn't check coolant level, stop and go city driving and gauge climbs to 1/2 mark. Stop and fill over flow. (Halfway between cool and warm line, like always). Drive engine cools. Couple days later 5 minute city drive, white smoke at destination. Runs fine, no smoke or overheating. Couple weeks later, 8 minutes city drive, blows white smoke at destination. Runs fine, no smoke after.
Week later, when on stopped on down slope, at light, oil light comes on and alarm ding, dings, throw it in park and it stops. This becomes intermittent, not often.
Take back to mechanic, he does pressure test, say can't find anything. Runs computer diagnostic from plug in van, no codes. Say is prob head gasket. Puts Bars in it.(Against my better judgement & life exp but he's the mechanic) Has stopped going through as much coolant. Wants to run warmer than normal at stop lights and after 15 minutes city driving, oil light ding ding at red lights. Put in park, stops then when mostly go and to freeway and rest of day to today, nothing. Still runs like a champ but has occasional miss during freeway drive.
What's causing this? No visible leaks. Coolant leaks while driving. No tailpipe white smoke. No water in oil.

Hello,

Okay, the cooling systems on any vehicle is closed system. The coolant has to be going somewhere. You might want to check or replace the radiator cap. These are pressure rated to release coolant when the pressure reaches a certain point. They do go bad and will allow coolant to leak out. Usually with a blown head gasket that is allowing coolant into a combustion chamber you will have white, sweet smelling exhaust smoke, and if the head gasket is blown in between a water and oil port, the coolant will mix with the oil and make it look like coffee with creamer in it. Please check and/or replace the radiator cap and get back to us with how everything turns out. We can go from there if needed.

Thanks,
Alex
