Bank 1 and bank 2 refer to the two sides of a V-6 and V-8 engine. There is too much unburned oxygen in the exhaust. Common causes are a vacuum leak in the fresh air intake system or a misfiring cylinder, typically due to a bad spark plug. Whatever the cause, it's affecting both sides or there is a problem on each side.
