Engine problem
2003 Audi A4 4 cyl Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 100000 miles

I have an Audi A4 1.8 Turbo. When it idles for about 3-5 minutes in begins to output blue - black smoke from the twin exhauts. Is this a problems caused because the turbo is not getting air through it as the vehicle is not moving? When driving it does not appears to be a great problem.

Alternatively could it be a fuel issue or something more sinister - the rings perhaps?

Much appreciated,

Chris.

Hi there,

This smoke will be oil smoke, I would do an oil consumption test first, change oil and filter make sure oil is exactly on full mark, note mileage. Nun for 1 week and check oil, if low add but measure amount used and note millage. Report back findings, check sparks plug for contamination (oil fouling) Is there any smoke (blue) when starting up cold? If not there may be an oil control issue happening, or a turbo oil seal, If a turbo seal is faulty you will see small specks of oil on the back of the car and the tail pipe will be greasy with a little oil as a turbo oil seal leak will not fully burn the oil entering the exhaust.
