97 Explorer auto 4WD

97 Exporer 150,000 miles, While driving in auto 4WD, car goes into 4WD at the slightest slip of the wheel (dry pavement). After 4WD engages, makes grinding noise. Then kicks out of 4WD by itself. Suggestions where to start?

thak it to a shop and have it scaned let me know what they find

Does the noise sound like it is coming from the front of the vehicle or under it like the transfer case? Could be a hub thats not completely engaging.Hopefully its not the transfer case.Have the PCM scanned for codes
