Let me try to get you on the right track. You smelled fuel earlier(dangerous situation) and engine ran terrible. "Smell" goes away and engine ran fine. Now engine won't run and you replaced the fuel pump. You don't hear pump whining when you try to start the car. If the pump is in the tank and it is full of gas then you might not hear it. Instead of listening, why don't you just carefully loosen the fuel connection at the fuel filter and then turn the ignition on to the start position and see if fuel is coming out. Now you know if problem is fuel or someting else. Check for spark. Check for broken timing belt etc. Let me know what you find.
