try to find someone with a scanner to see if all is working correctly.
Why does the transmission seem like it is overfilled..Can I still put the Lucas Trans additive in there..
Suggested Repair
Recheck the fluid with the engine running after holding the brake and shifting between reverse and drive. If the fluid is brown or smells burnt, do not change the fluid or filter. Lucas transmission additive was suggested only as a short temporary measure, and a scan was recommended. If the transmission has failed, a replacement or salvage-yard unit is often cheaper than buying another car.
Conversation Summary
The owner of a 1991 Chrysler 5th Ave with a 3.3L V6 reported transmission slipping and could drive only about 25 mph. The expert advised against changing burnt-smelling fluid, suggested Lucas additive only temporarily, and recommended a scan plus a proper running fluid check. After that check, a parts-store employee drove the car and said the transmission had failed. The expert said replacing it, possibly with a salvage-yard unit, is often cheaper than buying another vehicle. The owner's later question about pulling a used transmission in the San Francisco area was not answered.
