So, I have an issue that I can't find anywhere online. I had a mechanic look at the car and said it's the air compressor however, I'm doubting the diagnosis now. So, my van made a humming noise one day and after that the A/C stopped working and the vents in the dash also stopped working at the same time. It blows out air in all other positions and when I put it on defrost it's like it kicks up in fan speed and pushes all it has through the front vents although nothing makes it blow cold air. So maybe the compressor is bad, but I just find it really coincidental that both happened at the same time.

Hi,

I need a better understanding. First, I agree it is odd that the compressor would fail at the same time, but I'm confused about what is happening. Are you saying the airflow directions all work except the vents? The two really aren't related unless the controller has gone bad.

Do me a favor. With the engine running, open the hood. Have a helper turn the A/C on. You should hear a click when the AC compressor engages. See if you notice it.

Also, I need to know if you have automatic climate control or manual. I would like to read through the wiring schematics to see if the two tie together in any other way than the controller. Additionally, let me know where you heard the humming sound coming from. For example, was it the engine compartment or in the vehicle?

Here is a link you may find of interest in the interim:

Let me know as much as you can and if you have access to any tools for working on the A/C system.

Take care,

Joe
