My air conditioning has been working just fine since last summer. Now that the super hot days have hit it is not operating correctly. It works fine while sitting still or at a stop light. But when I get out on the highway its starts blowing hot, or musty air.

Have the charge checked. Make sure the heat exchanger is not blocked by debris, same with the condenser in front of the radiator.

I would first verify the cooling fan is working properly before you go messing with the charge levels. If it cools when the car is moving, it is an air flow through the condenser problem.
