TW, thank you, I ran the self-test and found that it was in fact, the blend door, which is apparently not an uncommon failure in the Taurus. Unfortunately, the book pegs changing this part at 6-12 hours, you have to completely remove the steering column and dash to do it. The local shop wants $500 for the job. Since the blend door is in the correct position whenever I start the car, is there a way to disable the blend door and keep it in this position? Also, I live in Florida and won't miss the heat function, would bypassing the heater core do the trick? Been racking my brain for alternate solutions.
