After hitting a deer within a minute of home several nights ago with only front impact, mainly front bumper but noticed hood appears to have latch popped all the time now. I drove straight home with really no issues and parked, but as of the next day vehicle won't start. I get power windows roll up and down seats move radio plays etc. But it will not turn over. I can hear fuel pump and have checked that all fuses and relays are good but nothing and nothing appears, other than front bumper to be damaged.I am lost as to what to do next. Please help!

Good Morning CarGirl,

I'm Tom and can give you a hand.

There is no Inertia Switch in your car which is a safety mechanism on most cars to prevent a fire in the event of a crash. So we will have to look for another issue. There must be a wire that has come loose or something like that. When you say it wont crank over but your hearing the fuel pump. When you put the key into the crank position do the dash lights turn on in the run position then go out in the crank position and do you hear any clicking when in the crank position from the front of the car? Is the area that the car got hit near the battery? How is your battery tie down? Does it look like the battery might have moved in the accident? Do a visual inspection of that area for a bad or disconnected wire including the battery terminals, verify they are tight. A bad ground connecting the engine to the frame is a possible cause. Look all around the crash area of the car for anything like that. Upload a pic of the damaged area of the car if you can.
Let me know,
Tom

When putting the key in you can do everything except start it, lights radio etc. We unhooked battery trying to reset if possible and reconnected it and took all fuses out and checked they are all good. The starter is looking difficult to even get to if that would be a culprit but the battery is on the opposite side of the accident damage not to say a hard jolt to something wouldn't have done this I am just having a hard time finding where.

Okay,

When you put it to the cranking position do the dash lights go out? If they do it's a connection somewhere between the battery and the starter if they don't go out this means the starter isn't even trying to engage pointing to the starter relay or solenoid being faulty or an open circuit. So your not seeing any wires at all around the damaged area?

There is a fuse link in the circuit which may be the issue. Here is a diagram of the starting system. We should be able to track down the problem with it. Do you have a test light by chance?

Hi Cargirl,

Okay, great you have a test light. First we want to see if there is any draw at all from the starter or its relay. Put the test light across the battery terminals so its lit have two people or set it up so you can walk from it. Then go to the crank position of the key and watch to see if the light does nothing and stays lit, or if it goes out or give a slight blink. If it goes out we are going to be looking for a loose or bad connection. If it dims for a second or does nothing but stay lit then we need to test, with the light, the relay signal in and out.
Use the schematic above and the terminals we are concerned with are #86 pink and orange wire which should get hot in the crank position. If it does the ignition switch at the key is working, and if terminal #87 a yellow/grey wire gets hot then the relay is working and its sending signal to the starter. Notice the two fuses, they are the next test spot. If all these things check out its looking like a failure in the starter.
Let me know how it comes out.
Tom

Hi,

If your hearing the starter click, it's low voltage or the starter is bad. The relay is working. So try to jump the car it might be enough to fire it and go get a starter.
