Hi, everyone!

My beloved 1996 acura tl has just started to over heat on me.

it seems like the only time the THERMAL-STAT jumps up is when im at a FULL STOP like at a long light and such, but once the car starts moving the thermal starts to drop ( cool down ).

my 2 question is. Is there a reason why it is just over heating when its at a stand still and not when accelerating?

2nd, should I consider flushing my radiator to see if thats the culprit?

thanks so much in advance guys-
JL
your help is greatly appreciated

i will definately leave positive feedbacks

Hi there,

There are a few things that will need checking, firstly ensure that the cooling fan is activating as the temp rises, it should come on well before any over heating is detected, replace the thermostat and flush the cooling system will also be advisable.

Hi, friend.

Yes, the fan does turn on just a little over half way ( medium temp )

but even with the fan cooling it, the thermal still crept up some; thats when I decided to turn of the engine instead of waiting it to hit the boil point.

Shortly after my engine started trying to over heat, now the Check engine light is also on.

Do you know if thats suppose to happen?

Thanks!

The check light should not be coming on, a scan will give us the set fault code that has triggered the light.

Thanks for the input on the situation, I just recently flushed and filled my radiator and now its cool and happy as ever.

The CEL even came off after a 15miles trip after flushed was performed.

Wonder what the check engine light had to do with anything but hey at least its off now, and the car doesnt over heat anymore so I should be happy.

Once again, big thanks!

Hi there,

Your welcome. Just be aware that now you have had the CEL on there will be a set code stored in the ecu, this will sit there until it is erased, thank you for using 2carpros, your feed back is always welcome.

Disconnecting the battery will reset the ecm and clear the cel. If the light comes back after resetting the ecm I would suggest that you get it checked since the problem is not temporary and may affect the vehicles operation
