This could be a few things. For example, there could be a fuel supply issue, a partially plugged catalytic converter, the need for a tune up, and so on.
Here is where I want to start: Let's see if there are any diagnostic trouble codes that can point us in the right direction. This vehicle has an OBD1 system that doesn't require a scanner to retrieve codes. Follow the directions in this link and let me know what you find:
